I'm kind of sceptic towards the * not use on live site * part...
SMF 2 RC was used widely and didn't had major flaws...
How is the situation with 1.6 ?

At first looks there really aren't many visible changes but there are many features which make it much easier to manage as a forum. Look at the admin panel for starters... I found a few plugins I have integrated into the default script. I'm going to keep looking around and testing it for bugs and errors but for the most part the script seems very stable.

Beta and RC are very different from each other. Beta is designed for bug testing whereas release candidates are more for final checks.
