Computers help
Hi, I'm really sick of hearing my dad saying "what do you do in here? this is soooo slow" and actually, it's him who does it slow So yeah, I'm about to buy a new computer (a portable one btw) and I need to know what's the best changes I can make on my new computer.
And yes, I'm talking about OS, stuff like RocketDock that can do cool efects or something, cleaning programs, the antivirus, downloads manager, and many other things you may want to say.
Please note, do not care about the prices or if it's free or not, I'll get it any of the ways. So yeah, Ubuntu or Linux might be my choices, since they're free. But doesn't matter, I'll get it other way.
I might choose Linux for OS and Kaspersky for the antivirus.
I don't have any other ideas for what to choose, help anyone?

RE: Computers help
You are talking about programs or the actual computer?
For antivirus for Windows choose AVG. It's beastly.

RE: Computers help
If you go with linux, there's really no need for an antivirus. But for Windows, Kaspersky is an excellent idea.
Best changes to make? Go with linux.

RE: Computers help
If you stick with Windows, AVG, like Dalton said, is epic. You can go with Microsoft Office if you wanna pay, or OpenOffice, which is completely free. Glary Utilities is VERY good for cleaning the registry, etc, and again, is completely free.
Ubuntu is a great choice for OS, but if you want power, I say Fedora.

RE: Computers help
Would someone make me an OS list? I mean, the most recent ones of course.

RE: Computers help
I think posting all of them would take a bit of time. Wikipedia has a beautiful list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_operating_systems And I'll see if I can dig out the most recent ones.
Some of them off the top of my head would be:
Windows Vista
Windows XP, SP3
Fedora 10
OpenSuse Linux 11.1
ubuntu 8.10
Mac OS X 10.5

RE: Computers help
Ok so, I'll use my computer for daily internet browsing (btw, does mozilla firefox works with all OS?), messenger (or a program like it, but for the OS I'll take, so this would be the last thing to think), work with Photoshop, I'll also use FTP programs (like smartFTP, FileZilla, etc), I'll do a LOT of downloads (applications, music downloads, plugins, themes, and other stuff for MyBB. I think that's all, maybe I'll install some games in the future, but not for now.
And with this list, I want someone to tell me which OS is the best depending on the activities that I normally do.
Many thanks.
