I have no experience about php before I find out mybb =))
But till now, I can mofidy some plugin. Well, I think it's not that hard. Problem is you have to read alot, practice alot and try to solve problem yourself before find someone help you.

I don't think it's that hard really, I've learned a lot of it by building small websites etc.
