On signup members would be required to provide an invite code. That admins can generate or other member can earn.

On join members earn x amount of codes (set by admins) and they earn X amount for X amount of posts. Or for x amount of time on the forum.

Admins can also give other members more codes though the admin panel which would in turn appear on there code page.

They could then give these to there friends.

Or someone with skills can contribute it towards MyBB source.
Id actually already be happy if you could maybe at a file that runs as a cron from mybb ( crons suck, but mybbs own system is nice ! ) that gives each user 1 invite per X time, and if they didnt use their previous one it wouldnt stack.
You could set it to a week, every week all members can invite someone, if they didnt invite someone they still get to only invite one for the next week.
Its not what the OP asked for, but its an easy lightweight alternative for some who are looking for this, until such a thing arrives.
