I agree with you. Many people start a forum and invest only in the domain and upload their website a free hosting account and they want performance (speed, error-free hosting) in exchange. If you start a website and you want to be competitive you need to invest in lots of things: domain, hosting, design, graphic, contests, etc.

Well it is important to the theme that will address the forum, but more important is to make a good positioning in search engines.
And to exchange banners with different thematic forums with large numbers of users.

Dont even think about making money from a forum. The donations just about cover the server if your on vps.
