Snippets only on portal?

I remember reading a guide about it a while back when MyBB 1.2 was still around but can't find it anymore...

Basically what I want to do is limit the amount of characters shown for each post found in the portal so rather than displaying the full post, I only want to show a snippet of it.

Anyone know how to do this?
