Well you can ruin a whole forum thread by using HTML. For example, you can redirect to pages, and if you forget to close a tag, it might ruin the forum thread layout.

I agree... XSS can actually do a big damage, not only to your site but also to your site users.. I was also planning to turn HTML on, but after reading vulnerability, i dropped the idea!

I would suggest to opt for MyCode instead...

I broke my test forum by putting </table> and </body> in posts

MyBB tries to stop malicious stuff but it still isn't advised, MyCodes are the better option, yeah, or at least having a plugin to limit HTML to certain users or groups.
