Does this have to be used with post counts? ie could you have custom fields etc

so if you wanted to do a contest who could get the most posts or w.e you would need to ask the user to write their name in a thread to play?

is it possible to have it for referals instead?

if you modified it yourself yes

Yeah, right now, you have to enter them manually.
