I just put the text on it's own seperate layer, I do that with everything :\

Paint.net is a great tool for picture if you learn how to use it but i prefer gimp. Btw nice sig i see alot of people make them

Man.. glossy effect is more easier with photoshop

set layer style like below :

gradient overlay (screen if dark bkg and multiply if light bkg) with less opacity.

inner glow with white and less size & opacity

inner shadow with size=0 , distance = choose as you wish by adjusting, color: white, with normal and not multiply. angle somewhere b/w 90 - 100.

this looks like somedescent gloss effect.
