Mod causes errors for me. Had to disable. Users can't sign up, they get to the part to enter username, password, and the image verification, click submit, and get the "you do not have permission to view this page" page. Also, when I tried to manually register a member, I get a blank white screen with () on it.

You can pick a group when you register at the forum. It is in register form.
