So do I. I've had so many problems thinking up and running a greatly-themed forum. A lot of mine die fast. ;.;

RE: How to start a forum
Well, best is that you start a forum about something you either:
  • Know alot about (games, programs, design, coding etc.)
  • Can get unique content for (warez, hacks etc.)
  • Enjoy doing that (gaming, programing, designing, coding etc.)
And clearly you need to think about how much you're willing to invest into the project (money and time).

RE: How to start a forum
Most of what svizy said is right(apart from "warez", not so unique and also very controversial ).
It should be about a service you provide or a topic that interests you, just so you don't lose passion of your site/forum a few days later. It helps to also find a friend interested in your topic to maybe check it out and help your run or add content to your forum. Now when your forum is up it's best to start early and get of your content on it, this will give your new members something to talk about. As an administrator you should keep as active as possible and communicate with your members to make them more active and more willing to participate on forum discussions.

You should never start a site/forum in the hope of making money that hardly ever goes anywhere, unless your google.

When picking a design you should look back at what your forum is for, for example a forum providing hosting will most of the time use professional commercial based style with a lot of grey/white, a forum about graphics will tend to opt for either a professional web2.0 feel with touches of bright colors or a dark grunge with a touch of color. You should look at other sites on the topic to find inspiration it's not illegal to get inspired only when you copy it, you might even find who designed their theme and request one for your site.

Well, I'm quite keen in online business, and I originally started with the intention of making money.

Still, the idea about making money from a website or forum is it never works out because either
A) The website/forum has nothing to offer, and probably never will
B) The plan to make money from a website was not planned out sufficiently
or
C) Not enough dedication on the owner's end.

If you have no intention of making money from your website/forum, then the reason a website/forum fails is almost always C. Truly, your forum/website is not dead until you say it is. So your original community left you, there's a whole internet full of other people out there, and you can easily build anew if you really want to.

So you don't know how to advertise, and you give up. That's lack of dedication. I found plenty of free ways more effective than paid methods by using Google.

It's usually lack of dedication on one end that results in the death of a forum/website.

I will talk about design only. I think its an important thing to consider while opening a forum.

Try to use a custom theme. It will increase your forums value to others. There are many mybb programmers whom help you can take. Ask them for a colorful template and also create some banners for your site.

People and target!
You can't start a forum with 5 members, you need a lot o them.
Also, you need a direction for your forum, a main subject.

RE: How to start a forum
To create a website you need to have set themes. Then you need to invest in hosting and domain, and then upload MyBB (or something else). The next step is the content - it must be that they were users. When we have, we can tackle CONTENT advertising and positioning.

As for the plug-ins - all come out in the wash Upload what you believe is appropriate and poczekja - users themselves will write about the new features that would be useful to your service.

I greet and wish you success - Tidus.
