I heard something funny in school about this and how they ran out of paper so that's why it ended there in their calendar...

No, this isn`t true. Each 26.000 (maybe 28.000, I`m unsure) years their "Great Cycle" ends and this is a very big holiday for Mayas . Their prophets said that 2012 will be the start of the new era.

Well, I don't believe on this ruckus. How will Earth end on 2012? Well, on Christian belief, God created the world for 7 days. And God loves all beings on Earth so why would he destroy it?
It is also prophesied that the world will end on Year 2000. What happened?
